Because I Can’t Wait Another Week
This is a quick bonus email because I can’t wait until next week to show you the cover of my book, and some of you may not follow me on social media where I posted a reveal reel last night.
I got my initial cover designs on Monday. They were not at all what I expected. I felt an 80s youth group vibe that I wasn’t really looking for. I’d asked for something that wasn’t girly and that would appeal across generations but particularly to a younger Millennial/Gen Z crowd. My publisher told the designer that we were looking for hopeful rebels not grungy ones.
The designs weren’t girly, and they were definitely hopeful, but maybe a little too perky? There was one that had potential. The designer (through my publisher) patiently made tweaks with me throughout the week until we created something that made me happy.
Those are the first few sentences of my introduction. I’m putting them up on Instagram later this morning. The cover still contains bright colors and an 80s vibe, but I like it. It is hopeful. It has meaning. It gives a glimpse of the little book inside.
I love that Religious is in an uptight font. And that Rebels looks like a sunset. I love that Rebels is taking over Religious. I love the broken mosaic cross. And that the word Awkward looks awkward. I’m happy that I get to write this book for you and that it’s actually going to be in your hands soon. The interior is amazing too. The cross and mosaic pieces show up all through the book.
It still feels a bit surreal—this fast paced, crazy adventure I’m on. Two months ago I didn’t even have a completed book. And now I have a cover.
Thanks for being part of the journey, friends. I’m beginning plans for a launch team/group/thing so if you are interested in being a part of that stay tuned.
Happy Sunday!

Woohoo!!! 🥳🥳🥳 *Happy dance*
The book looks inviting to me, sparking a healthy dose of curiosity with a side of not taking ourselves too seriously -- which is a breath of fresh air for religiosity, I think. It seems that one of the things that Christian religiosity tends to do is take itself too seriously and crowd out the joy and wildness of Jesus (even writing “wildness” about Jesus feels a little too much, haha!) and the truth of our humanity (in spite of Paul’s reminders that none of us were “all that and the bag of chips”). We’re awkward beings in an awkward, messy world; how fitting that our faith would be awkward as well 💓 I think the cover really nods us in this direction well!
I love your cover and am so excited for you!
