Christy, you wrote,"My faith is built on these foundational pieces, but it holds because of the mysterious Presence I’ve met Who has changed my life. This Being who I cannot explain has been there every step of my journey: guiding, pulling, supporting, whispering, prodding, hinting, and helping me. I’m still a Christian because I believe in the reality of Jesus Christ, His Spirit, His death and resurrection, and His ability to reconnect me to my Creator God. That’s my simple answer. "

Mine too.

The Mysterious Presence is key. Karl Rahner wrote that the Christian of the future will be a mystic or nothing at all. Head knowledge will not suffice any more, if it ever did.

This is such a great piece. I love how you have described how you have stripped away all the weeds (or are in the process of doing so) to return to your First Love, the Real Jesus. If your feet are anchored on that Rock you can't be moved. All the winds and shifting sands of men's doctrines cannot shake who you are, nor steal what you have, because your feet are on that Foundation. As for 'being a Christian', no-one can deny you the right to call yourself that either. You see, Christianity is not a one-size-fits-all religion. Because it's Jesus who personally guides each of us, no one person's walk is going to look like another person's walk. No-one has the right to say our walk is 'wrong', and therefore we are not a Christian. The established church has pirated all the phrases like 'personal relationship', 'grace' and everything else until they no longer mean what they used to do, and the same is happening with 'deconstruction'. Only those who have been through, or are going through, deconstruction, can describe what it's like because again it's unique to each individual. It therefore follows that 'who' or 'what' is a 'Christian' depends entirely upon the individual, another thing that isn't cut-and-dried and therefore the Evangelical church doesn't like. Also, looking at it from another angle, even if there are things you don't like about what the church calls 'Christianity', you need not be ashamed to wear the name 'Christian' yourself. No matter how sullied the name is in the world's eyes, or even in our own eyes, it is still your birthright, it's yours, and it was bought for you and given to you. Because, for you, it's true: you know and follow the real Jesus, you know it, you believe it, and that is your faith and it's yours. Don't let anyone else steal it!
